Capstone Project: Nostalgia and the Revival of Cultural Eras

For my Journalism Capstone project, I examined how digital platforms like TikTok have transformed nostalgia from a private emotion into a collective, algorithm-driven experience. Through my research, I found that modern media often prioritizes emotional impact over historical truth, creating a "perfected" version of the past.

My interviews revealed a clear generational divide: while older participants like my mom, Ilene Rosen, maintain a balanced view of history, my friends often use nostalgia as a filter to simplify a stressful reality. Ultimately, I realized that nostalgia exists in the space between history and myth, serving as a powerful force that shapes our identity and cultural understanding.

Finding balance: Simple habits to strengthen your semester

The semester begins, and with it the old familiar cycle of classes, activities and campus responsibilities. Amid these numerous expectations, however, it is easy for students to forget the most essential ingredient for success at UW-Whitewater: mental health.
Maintaining mental health isn’t necessarily something that requires dramatic change. Instead, it’s the sum of various tiny, considered decisions—short pauses between commitments, moments of mindfulness or writing things down before bed—that...

Greek importance: community, friendship, growth

When students think about Greek life at UW-Whitewater, one word comes up again and again: community. For many, joining a fraternity or sorority means finding a home away from home, where support, friendship and opportunity are always close at hand.
“I think about community,” said Kaitlin Geisler, an elementary education major, president of Order of Omega, and member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. “It really doesn’t matter if we’re in the same organization—we all build friendships and relationships across...

Finding comfort in pet therapy

At UW-Whitewater, one of the cherished campus traditions isn’t held in a classroom or a lecture hall – it’s in the Andersen Library, where wagging tails and wet noses help students find relief from the pressures of college life.
Pet therapy began in the fall of 2012, thanks to Becky Jones, a former public relations staff member. She saw the library as more than just a place for studying – it could also be a haven for mental health and emotional support. With so many students missing their pets b...

From coral reefs to classrooms

When Stephen Levas steps into the turquoise waters of Belize next year, he won’t just be exploring coral reefs, he’ll be diving into a new chapter of global collaboration, discovery and mentorship.
Levas, an associate professor of geology at UW-Whitewater, has been named a 2025–26 Fulbright Scholar, a recognition that will take him and his family to the University of Belize to teach and research coral reef ecology.
“I’ve known about the Fulbright program for most of my academic career,” Levas sa...
